Hi folks,

After having a chat with Paul on Monday through Skype, I was beginning
to get a little annoyed at the lag while chatting. It almost seems as
if it's not possible to have sound travelling both ways down the wire.
Not that I deliberately try to talk over people, but when there's
background noise it can be very irritating.

So, I've decided to sign up to an SIP account and try Ekiga which was
installed by default on Etch. Now being a sad lonely person I don't
know any others using it, so if any of you would be willing to try it we
can see if it proves to be better than Skype. I'd certainly like to
move from Skype with it's poor Linux support and proprietary protocol.
Ekiga is free in both senses and is even compatible with Microsoft
NetMeeting.

While I'm writing; would there be interest in me dragging my machine to
the Brooklyn centre sometime to show you how and what I do with Gramps,
the genealogy software? I'd also like to do something with the Open
Street Map project. I might, if there's interest, be able to talk the
fella who introduced me to the project to come over from Filey to show
us how he does it.

Things are unlikely to happen immediately as I could be making a dash to
York hospital for the arrival of our second child and clearly will be
rather busy afterwoods. I can't see me arranging any meets till after
the new year, but would like to get a feel for the level of
interest there might be.

Toodle pip,

Al
