Well at this end

mii-tool -V eth1
mii-tool.c 1.9 2000/04/28 00:56:08 (David Hinds)
SIOCGMIIPHY on 'eth1' failed: Operation not supported

and ditto if you try to set anything

trying ethtool

ethtool -s eth1 speed 100 duplex full
Cannot get current device settings: Operation not supported
  not setting speed
  not setting duplex

maybe the card is just dead, I'll try swapping over to use the eth0 card
then booting off a knoppix cd and see if the network set up then works
