That's a fair comment. You do build from scratch, although these days
you can download a CD with some prebuilt binaries on it (but that rather
defeats the purpose of Gentoo in my mind). However, you do learn a lot
about how the system is put together. If you haven't tried Gentoo, may I
suggest you take a look at a few of the pages of the installation
handbook at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook.xml?part=1 -
you'll see that the documentation is well-written, and the task is
perhaps not quite as daunting as you might think. If you can download
an ISO file and burn it to a CD, and you have a broadband connection,
it's worth a try.

I'm not saying it's right for everyone, but I've used quite a few linux
distros since 1991, and this is the best one for me.
