Seeing as it was the ACPI/Gnome Power Manager issue that appears to have
been the straw that broke your back, did you:

a) consider booting with acpi=off, then disabling gnome-power-manager?
(since it's almost a cosmetic thing only, once you know roughly how long
your battery lasts for).

b) looking to see if there were any BIOS updates for your laptop? (since
that's where the default DSDT comes from that the Linux ACPI code will use)

c) Having a look in /usr/src/linux/MAINTAINERS and emailing the appropriate
maintainers to inform them of your problem, and which kernels it does and
doesn't occur with? (Len Brown would appear to be a good person to start
with)

For someone who's been using Linux for over ten years, I'd expect those to
be the least one would try, even if you aren't prepared to go grubbing
around in kernel C code.

Best Regards,
Alex.
