Gareth,

Knoppix is cool (if you prefer Gnome, as all sensible people do,
then you should look at Gnoppix - same idea, better desktop).

We've been evaluating Linux desktops here for non-technical users.
Installing Gnoppix/Knoppix tends to be a waste of time as in our
experience as the installs rot badly (these projects are about bootable
disks and have very little focus on running the machines over extended
periods).

We've been trialing libranet, but it suffers from many of the same
problems as straight Debian, so we're know waiting for UserLinux to go
gold before trialling that.

For a smaller installation base I'd probably just say test with Gnoppix
and then install SuSE or Mandrake both of which will do a good job of
detecting your dads hardware.
