In my opinion, Gentoo is perfectly capable of being a "low
maintainance" system. Firstly, use the stable branch which has less
updates with ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" in make.conf.
Secondly... Don't update unless you have to! There's no need to update
your system every day. I only update every few weeks, or when there's
a security fix on a piece of software I need to apply.
At the risk of starting a flame war; if you really think a binary
distribution would be less bother, use debian. :-)
