Because (as was pointed out in another reply), ntl's network is made of
various networks that are not the same, e.g. they incorporate Cable &
Wireless's network in Brighton, which is not the same as ntl's other

They are not what I would class as a proper ISP :)

Are you sure? Last time I checked, ntl force outgoing web connections
through a transparent proxy, which is really seriously wrong imho.

Also, the last time I did a traceroute out of an ntl cable modem it crossed
various private IP ranges before making it to the real Internet. This also
set alarm bells ringing.
Equally, you can't call up ntl and get a range of static IPs or domains or
whatever, hence my comment about them not being an ISP. You get a pipe and
a proxy and if you're lucky a news server ;)
