I managed to get through the installer easily enough, then the next
time I booted after `apt-get install ubuntu-desktop`, it'd freeze,
and wasn't very verbose about it. :O

I chrooted in from a knoppix cd and tried removing various things from
booting, to no avail. I'll have another go sometime...
