OK, 

From broad experience and with a view for your desire to use more recent 
software I would advise one of the following:

 - Arch Linux with AUR packages.  (if you want the latest goodies in a 
sensible stable format).

 - Gentoo (If you want the really quite newish goodies and are prepared for a 
lot of compiling)

 -  Ubuntu (or Kubuntu if you prefer KDE) if you want a distro with a 6 month 
release cycle which is always reasonably up to date (i.e. more up to date 
than Debian).

- Debian if you're prepared to run the "unstable" packages.
