This hasn't been required on the BT ATM (ADSL, ish) network since about
2002. If you're changing it to anything, it should be 1458 (for complex
reasons I won't go into here) - and you would need to do it on the WAN
interface only.

If your ISP is telling you to change the MTU, then you need to get a
better ISP.

(OK, I suppose there is some remote offchance that you're on the older
DSLAMs at the exchange, but I doubt it - I'm pretty sure BT swapped them
all out)
