That baffles me too.

If you want to upgrade to /etc/apt/sources.list

Changed the "stable" or "sarge" options to "etch" so it looks something
like this:

  deb http://www.uk.debian.org/debian etch main
  deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main

To upgrade to etch use the commands:

  # apt-get update
  # apt-get dist-upgrade
