Ah! you have two drives. I have experienced similar problem and the 
solution was temporally disable one drive so that it now has only one. 
This problem has caused me much problem on an occasional machine. In 
fact when I work on a machine which has two drives I am always ready to 
simply dissable one if necessary. And, of course, you are sure that this 
machine can be booted from the CD, obviously yes, as you did already 
install the original system.

I do, at times have to fight machines, but they do always succumb.
