[Sussex] Orange HTC Desire HD and OpenStreetMap - Help Wanted

Hi All, 

My colleague Alex is coming along to the moot to say hello He's
technically savvy but isn't normally a Linux user.

By coincidence he received his new HTC Desire from Orange this morning
- it's a free upgrade from his broken one.

It's stylish looking with a nice large screen but doesn't have a model
name or number on it and there was little by way of paperwork with it.

Comparing it with pictures on the HTC page it looks like an HTC Desire
HD.

He tapped for maps and was taken to an Orange Maps download costing
£7.50 a month, which may not be worth it if seldom used.

The whole phone looks full of Orange apps (see

So I suggested OpenStreetMap and he found an Android download called
MapDroid straightaway.

My questions:

How can you find out what version of Android is installed?

Does anyone have any experience with running MapDroid, especially on
an Orange branded Desire?

The other thing was that when going to the Internet and tapping on the
address bar, the onscreen keyboard didn't appear. After navigating
around some more screens it appeared. Is there some trick involved?

How much difference is there really likely to be between this Orange
branded one and an unsubsidised, unbranded (and unlocked) handset?

Any tips appreciated.
