If it's set up to use utf-8 (I don't use Kmail so I don't know how to do
that) then it should "just work".

To input the letters, hold down Shift + Alt Gr, followed by the letter,
followed by the accent. E.g. Shift + Alt Gr, followed by Y followed by ^
produces Ŷ (which should come out as Y with a ^ above it).
