AFAIK fdisk only knows about what's in the /etc/fstab file.

You should have a look at "tail -f /var/log/messages" and/or /var/log/syslog 
as these files hold your messages about devices found. The "tail -f" is an 
updating display (in a console) or the bottom of the file.
