I'm no expert, but I've seen a lot of systems die, and only some of them
died because of something
I did :-)

I would first make sure that your cables are good - the right type, and
properly connected. I've seen
plenty of problems like this due to ropey IDE or SATA cables. You didn't
mention what sort of disc
or controller/motherboard chipset you're using, so it's hard to be more
specific. If by chance you have
a spare, try swapping the cable out. If there is another device on the IDE
channel, try removing it
temporarily.

Also check your drive jumpers - maybe the disc came set for C-Select? I had
a Mandriva install on a Dell box
that *really* didn't like it unless the disc was appropriately set to either
slave or master.

If that fails, you may be looking at a failed IDE controller chip. If you
have a spare PCI slot, you  may
be able to fix that for a few quid by getting a PCI IDE board.
