Good point - thinking back to any situation with background noise, it is 
very hard to determine which sound is the person speaking, and which is 
the background. It's not so much someone speaking too quiet, or a 
general hearing loss - the sound is there, it is just not getting 
"sorted" correctly. Some words do stand out, and in those cases I try to 
guess what the other words are based on context. In all, it tires the 
mind out very quickly.

Apparently it's "Cocktail Party Syndrome". Trying to explain the 
problems has always resulted in blank stares, and "you don't need 
hearing aids, so how can there be a problem?" In all I can sum it up 
with, "Think of a working microphone, but the computer's audio drivers 
require a patch."
