UKUUG/Apple Technical Briefing 2006 - OS X for Intel
UKUUG and Apple are happy to announce another Technical
Briefing "OS X on Intel", from 1:30pm on Thursday April 20th
in Central London. www.ukuug.org/events/apple06
For over five years, Mac OS X has combined the power of UNIX
and the ease of the Macintosh for users around the world.
This January, Apple shipped Mac OS X for Intel processors
for the first time. The entire Macintosh product line will
transition to Intel processors by the end of 2006.
During Mac OS X's transition to Intel processors, Eric
Albert, Senior Software Engineer in Apple's Core
Technologies group, has worked on almost every part of the
operating system, from the OS kernel and compiler tools to
applications like iPhoto and Keynote.
He will discuss:
* The challenges of migrating an entire operating system
to a new architecture
* How the Intel transition affects scientific computing
on Mac OS X
* How to make your own software run natively on both
PowerPC and Intel-based Macs
* Rosetta, the translation engine which enables existing
PowerPC software to run on Intel-based Macs
* Intel's published processor roadmap and how it may
affect the future of personal and scientific computing
Also speaking is Graham Lee from the University of Oxford,
who will discuss his experiences of integrating Intel Macs
into their existing PowerPC network, processes and
infrastructure.
This event is aimed at all UNIX users, particularly those
interested in its core technologies and the associated
development environments.
Online registration for this event is free and open to all,
although numbers are limited.
