A question for the Debian-ists :

Ok so I've installed Woody .... it came with a 2.2.20 kernel :( no sound
modules or anything useful though.

so I apt got the source for 2.2.20, configured and compiled it the Debian
way. Very very good way I got a few .debs of my Kernel. All nice and
everything but alsa-base won't go on even with this new sound enabled kernel
:

     Setting up alsa-base (0.9.0rc3-0.1) ...
Starting ALSA sound driver (version none):modprobe: Can't locate module
snd
    failed.

I got this from dmesg :

    Sound initialization started
detect_sscape_pnp: port 0 is not free
    soundscape: Card not detected
    Sound initialization complete

and further down :
    Via 686a audio driver 1.1.8-2.2
    ac97_codec: AC97 Audio codec, vendor id1: 0x414c, id2: 0x4710 (Unknown)
    via82cxxx: board #1 at 0xDC00, IRQ 10

So it knows the soundcard (onboard I know) is there but I can't seam to
fathom out what to do next. Any hints?

Cheers
Lee
