I tend to be more interested in old kit as far as Linux is concerned although 
I would of said:

1. Biggest HDD you can get, big is best
2. Lots of memory
3. DVD-RW or CD-RW
4. Decent CPU

I'm not that bothered about the other stuff most laptops these days come with 
things like modems and NIC anyway.
