Part of the reason for the lack of performance is the in many
distributions you are running binaries that have been compiled to run
(or crawl!) on a 386, if your lucky they might have been compiled for a
Pentium.  Now if you use Gentoo, the binaries are optimised for your
hardware (and, Aq, updates can be run overnight. use distcc and they go
even faster)
