[Wolves] What makes Gnome/KDE slow?

Yes but Gentoo on a 500Mhz laptop? I'd like to be able to use my
laptop before I'm dead thank you :) I started to compile Gentoo on a
1Ghz Desktop, after an hour I gave up am I too assume that everything
you download via portage is source and you have to compile that too? I
can't see how it would work otherwise. I want to download software and
use it, not download software, fix dependencies, wait for it to
compile and use it, all for the sake of 0.2 seconds off the programs
load time :P

The extra performance you speak of I really don't think is that
noticeable. I used to use a 686 compiled distro that was built for
performance called Yoper. It was fast but it's not as fast as running
Gnome on top of XFCE.
