I feel your pain.

We usually write all of our sites according to requirements using all of
our own code. However, a client approached us wanting fixes their
previous developers had failed to do and the task was given to me.

Once I'd spent a couple of days working out how the thing worked I just
about managed to do most of what they'd wanted, although it took a lot
of trial and error before I was able to do what was required without
breaking some other part of the site. Then something about SSL
certificates (outside of our control) came up. It was decided that
wasn't our responsibility as the site wasn't hosted on our servers. So
then it went quiet for a couple of days while I interpreted their
requests and got everything working.

Next thing was an email from their hosts reporting a phishing scam or
three hosted on their servers, installed through some security hole in
Zen Cart. Downloaded copy of scam code for study, deleted from server,
disabled register_globals then looked into updates to Zen Cart. I
established it was running the latest version before a major version
update, which we wouldn't do without client paying for dev time. They
refused that, accused us of damaging their site and causing all sorts of
issues and left us.

I wouldn't touch Zen Cart ever again if I can avoid it.
