(nb. none of this is directly aimed at anyone specific on-list.)

I disagree. "Venting" about other OSes - especially in the form of
purile M$-bashing - is probably setting back the Free software movement
by a good 5 years in terms of mainstream recognition and non-enthusiast
adoption. It makes the Linux community look like unprofessional,
childish idiots, antagonises those who might otherwise consider trying a
non-MS operating system, and reinforces the stereotype that Windows is
the only "serious" prosumer/business desktop OS.

Also, by targetting MS Windows, it's impossible not to be one step
behind. IMO, those behind the various Linux desktop projects (Gnome,
KDE, etc, as well as distro teams) should focus on implementing features
based on their own merits rather than "well OS X / Vista does it, so we
should too". In short, if it wants to be a leader in the market, it
needs to stop following and start leading.
