I possibly forget the -X option to ssh from time to time, but it's more
likely that I haven't got all my sshd forwarding ducks in a row.  Thanks
for reminding me that the daemons have to be configured as well.

 The "Make CapsLock an additional Control" option is actually under
 "Control Key Position" under the Layout Options tab on my system

I supose my real point was (in your words) "the available XKB tools don't
yet go so far as to make it easy to add new options", i.e. you have to
work quite hard to figure out the X keyboard-input model.

My apologies if the illustrative example of my case seemed to suggest
that I was pissed off with X for failing to cater for my particular
needs.
