With a lot of help I finally got this sorted.  The problem was a 
combination of routing table mistakes and the worst interface you could 
imagine.  The smallest alteration to a setting reboots the router, and if 
you have done something in the wrong order that will lock you out, so you 
have to do a system reset and start again.  What's worse, pages are 
presented in an order that will do just that.

Everything is working now, but I really would advise against the router, 
for sheer aggravation.  I suspect that it would be a nuisance even to 
someone with a good deal of experience.  Last night a very experienced 
network admin spent more than 2 hours in chat with me, talking me through.  
It ought to have taken him minutes, because the problems were almost all 
not of my making, but of sheer bad design.  BTW, the model of router is 
Acer WLAN-G-RU1.
