I use Mobile Trails Explorer  for my phone - it saves the gpx file as
a stream to the phone's filesystem so you don't lose any data - plus
it can show the tracks as you make them, and download osm tiles.

I like trekbuddy, there is a great website that can package up OSM map
tiles for use with the application.
