I and many others have been using it to boot Linux on Apple kit, for
pretty much the same period of time :-)

Similarly, I've been using GPT partitioned disks for quite a few years
... and what a breath of fresh air that was.

So, yes, the issue is the so-called 'secure boot', not UEFI.
