I thought this might interest someone out there.  It's not strictly 
GNU/Linux based but it does point to the early beginnings of open 
source software.  If you scroll down to the bottom you can read about 
an early version of a commercial computing project in Sheffield.

Some of it is really funny.  Some of it isn't.
