[Wylug-discuss] New to Leeds Need to find a LUG

I'm also in Alwoodley.
There's the option of hiring the Moortown Social Club opposite the fire station for around a tenner an hour.
Or simply go to the pub!
Lord Darcy maybe...?

It's a shame the Chained Bull's been destroyed to make way for hyperspace M+S...

My preference though would be to resurrect proper WYLUG meetings in town as it's a central focal point.
That said, when WYLUG was first setup back in ooooohhhhh 94...95ish maybe - Jim, Simon, Nigel, James - can you recall when the seed for using the room in the EC Stoner building was first sewn?... - Linux was in its infancy as a user group was ideal for the time.

These days... Is there such a requirement for an actual user group? We've gone a little more mainstream, and the ways of keeping up to date, in-touch, etc have morphed. Which is why when Jim retired and the University changed its stance on the room, we started meeting in pubs in town, simply to have that meet and greet, social space.

What do people think, does Linux still need propping up. Is there still a need for a get-together?

Working in Manchester, I see the various Silicon Drinkabout events that run cross platform/language/framework
and there's a good vibe.

To that end, would it be better to link WYLUG (what's left of it) with say the Hackspace just off Regent Street?
Free parking, a pub (of sorts) round the corner (and along the road a bit...) and it's only just outside town so
buses/trains are also easily get-at-able (is that a word?)

Come on people - shout up!

I too am in North Leeds (Meanwood) - if anybody fancies trying to get
together for a meet then I'm game. We could start off discussing my
theory of why the activity of LUGs seems to be inversely proportional
to the success of Linux... :-) We could try North Leeds, or town for a
venue?

Afraid to say I rarely made it to the wylug in the past, but the odds
are better now (circumstance change). The chances of me getting to
Sheffield or Bradford are slim.

Currently running some Fedora and Ubuntu machines at home.
