Hi Steve,
If you think about it for a minute, you'll realise that for anyone to
have a decent chance of helping you, you will have to provide a bit more
information than that, e.g. which suggestions in the HOWTOs have you
tried? which commands and arguments did you use? what output (if any)
did you get from those commands?
I am guessing that you are new to Linux. Most newbies wisely choose one
of the most popular and easy to install distributions for their first
attempt. Nowadays, distros like Mandrake, SuSE and RedHat pretty much
work out-of-the box with standard hardware like your printer. Equally
importantly, the large install base of these distros means that there is
good chance of finding someone else who recognises your symptoms and can
suggest a solution.
RedHat certainly seems a better bet than your first choice. There are
many RedHat users in WYLUG, for example. Along with many WYLUG members
I prefer Debian, but the its appalling installation procedure does not
lend itself to beginners, not even a little bit.
