[Wylug-help] hardware vs software advice needed

As I explained in an earlier post:

we've had lots of toruble trying to get a HighPoint RocketRaid 404
card working on our Dell Precision 420 dual-processor system running
RedHat 9.0.

We're now having to consider using software RAID instead, or buying
another (probably more expensive) RAID card.

How reliable is software RAID?  Performance is not as importance as
protecting the data.

Are there other recommended RAID cards for IDE drives that run happily
on Dell multi-processor systems sunning Linux?
