Hi Gary,
On Debian you need to set up '/etc/bluetooth/pin' with the 'pin' used for the pairing. And then bind the rfcom to your phone, ie. '/etc/bluetooth/rfcomm.conf' should contain something like.

You might be missing the /dev entry
slone:/home/simon# ls -al /dev/rfcomm0
crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 216, 0 Mar 10 15:47 /dev/rfcomm0
