Anytime I have drive issues (suddenly) I pull out my new spare cables
and swap.  Its an easy first step to trouble shooting.  If other ide
devices are being detected, it's  not likely BIOS but I suppose not
impossible,  the cable is the first thing between the IDE Mobo connector
to the drive in question.

I've saved 3 separate systems this year, where friends thought their
systems were completely trashed by some virus (ms geeks), they laughed
at me for bringing in a new IDE cable. Voila, power-up, boot to OS, only
to find out that through their attempts at fixing drive issues from
inside windows I'd had to fix their (as my 5 year old linux-user son,
who is a 3 1/2 year veteren on Mandrake, would say) "discombooberated
window box"
