[Wylug-help] Mail server problem

Over the past 3 days or so I have racked my brains, and those of several other
people, to find out why I can't complete turning this box into a mail server
for the family lan.  The situation now is:

Fetchmail collects mail from two ISPs, PopFile tags it, postfix drops it into
the mailbox and kmail collects it and distributes it to folders.  All this
works perfectly on this box.

However, if I try to collect from the remote box I get
'could not connect to anne-linux.lydgate.net'.

I can send mail to myself from that same remote box and collect it on the
server.

Telnet to port 110, 123 (popfile listen port) or 995 always returns
telnet: connect to address 192.168.0.30: Connection refused
whether I do it on the server or the remote box.

The firewall appears to be ruled out.  Certainly stopping the firewall does
not change anything.  Also I have been told that if it were a firewall
problem the packets would simply be dropped and I would not get this message.

chkconfig --list | grep pop
shows
        ipop2:  off
        ipop3:  on
        pop3s:  on

The server is running Mandrake 10.0, kernel 2.6.3-7mdk with win4lin patch.  I
don't want to use any of the gui tools, except as a way of viewing things,
because they overwrite configuration files without backup, so far as I can
see, and I hate the feeling of lost control.  At the same time, I can only
edit textfiles as long as I understand exactly what I am changing and why, so
I often need very specific help.  If, for instance, you say 'have you checked
xyz?' you may have to tell me how to check it.  I don't think the
distro/version is significant, though, so any thoughts/ideas/suggestions
would be greatly welcome.
