I don't use grub, so I'm not sure if it works in the same way as lilo does.
What I would do is to wait for the lilo screen to come up, then hit Esc which
takes you to a text screen with the options listed. Try
linux noapic nolapic
and various combinations of apic and apci settings.  It's usually one of those
that causes the problem.
