This is pretty much exactly how vpm works:

Use it every now and then, but nothing too heavy (its slow as you'd expect).
It' based on DSL:

http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/

Which is itself meant to boot from USB/business card CDs.  That's another
project I haven't finished.

I have some spare blank business card CD's if you want.
