Puppy Linux can do this. Not sure how maintainable it is though. It
sounds like you want to be able to zap applications on and off at will.
I've had limited success booting from USB2.0 memory sticks, whereas
USB1.1 ones have always worked for me.
I've never managed to get the 'Integral' 128MB USB2.0 that's attached to
my keys to boot. The instructions never claimed either way about whether
it could boot or not.
The last time I tried this was on a EPIA mini-itx board, so maybe it was
a BIOS issue. YMMV with USB2.0 drives.
