Thanks, John. But what does it all mean? (all very well being a keen
supporter, but one day I must get round to learning how it works :) )

All that's in there is a checkbox for SPDIF Out: It was unchecked when
we started all this so I checked it. Now I've unchecked it again - and
the CD in the player plays, aplay /usr/share/sounds/generic.wav gives a
beep and thank you, thank you, thank you.
