[WYLUG-help] Server distro - which one?

I found out how to write the output of whatever - in this case the dmesg
command - to wherever using > to pipe it there. However, having got what
I want in a format I can theoretically use, I find Sarge is only giving
me a nonqualified hostname and am having difficulty getting it to
recognise more than the gateway (a router) outside its own box.

I don't mind learning, as I've stated elsewhere, however I really have
no desire for a three year course and a huge desire to have something I
can work with now. Is getting the thing to work within my existing
network going to be a relatively easy matter (it hasn't been by
referring to "Linux Administration handbook" by Nemeth et al) or should
I dump it until I have time to do another degree course?

So far, I've examined within the etc directory hostname,
network/interfaces, network/options, hosts, resolv.conf, nsswitch.conf
and host.conf, adding fully qualified hostnames with IP addresses in
hosts and changing to fully qualified the hostname entry.

Any tips or comments?

Mike
