I've just found:

  System Settings > Sound & Multimedia > System Notifications

  and 
  
  System Settings > Sound & Multimedia > System Bell

The former dialogue is way too overloaded for me to quickly figure out what to do.

The latter is the exact opposite, with only one option: "use system bell
instead of system notification".

Looks like Kubuntu has some way to go in catching up Gnome-based Ubuntu
usability in this area.

Again, pragmatic advice from habitual KDE users would be appreciated.
N.B. my tastes in multimedia desktop support are distictly minimalist
and 'old school'.
