Sorry that didn't seem to work. It ran through the process but still no
window surround.

Also I didn't know about the google linux page, but I do now and will start

Hi Scott,
It looks like your window manager is missing or misbehaving.
Under Gnome on Ubuntu, it's metacity.
Try the following in a terminal window:
sudo apt-get --reinstall install metacity
Btw, did you know about the google linux search? www.google.com/linux
