[Wylug-help] ubuntu window problem

Thank you all for your help.

I did the metacity --replace in user mode and it has put the window manager
back on, except in root. Beryl doesn't work now and a few other
applications don't work i.e terminal. I think I will put a fresh install in
as it is Christian Ubuntu which didn't give me an md5sum to check download.
But I also downloaded the normal version which I put on my parents desktop
as they are a bit computer unfriendly, so I enlarged the OOo, mozilla fire
and bird icons so that is all they look at when they log on. I bought him
broadband for fathers day.

My graphics is nvidia 6800's sli'd and when I put beryl on the videos seemed
to run smoother than just having the nvidia driver. Don't know why.

I like feisty as it found my network printer no probs. Christian Ubuntu
comes with automatixs as standard which is very good to newbies like me when
installing codecs etc, as I have found it quite difficult trying to embed
them.

Scotty
Ps will probably see you all at the next WYLUG pub meeting.

Hiya Scott,

Hopefully you're not logging into X as root. ;)

On ubuntu don't run X commands as root. Use sudo. Root user doesn't have
X access without jumping through some hoops and potential security
holes.

As the person running the X window desktop session run the metacity
command - in a terminal - in the desktop session. i.e. log in to a gnome
session - open an xterm/konsole/gnome-terminal/rxvt (insert your
favourite terminal) - then type metacity --replace and hey presto
metacity replaces your non-existant/faulty window manager.

Additionally a piece of software called beryl-manager sits in the corner
near the clock and lets you choose a fall back window manager and/or
replace beryl completely. It also lets you play with some settings that
make it more Nvidia/ATI friendly which might cure your problem.

Have you thought of removing beryl? I have a fairly recent nvidia
graphics card (7950) and it doesn't work with beryl/compiz.

HTH.

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?
