Looks like the auto-config is more of a problem than I thought it would 
be. Darn thing.

Okay, first boot into recovery mode (from the GRUB menu). Then perform 
(as root):

dpkg-reconfigure xorg
cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak [just to be on the safe side]
nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Look for a list of screen resolutions and delete any from the list that 
look like nonsense (i.e. your monitor doesn't support them). If you're 
not sure, do some research on your monitor, or guess (most TFT screens 
can cope with having the wrong resolution set, but need the correct 
refresh rate). Good luck!
