Debian Etch.
PWM window manager
mrxvt (efficient tabbed terminals)
Xfishtank (to make up for not having Beryl 3D desktop ;)
mutt (or GNUs, NMH or WL)
BSDgames package (hours of fun :)

Download the latest Debian Network Installer CD, let it install its
defaults if you've HDD space for GNOME (otherwise uncheck the desktop
box and manually install the X-Window System), and add the above
packages plus your choice of W3 and office software.

btw I didn't mention Emacs (other than the implication in the
alternative MUAs), as whatever you choose to install in addition to the
included nano editor is probably something you already have a
preference for, but emacs makes a great ``Desktop OS'' for such systems
