The way I typically do it is through nautilus in GNOME. Simply open
any file window and do the following steps:
1. On the menu go File ->Connect To Server...
2. Enter the correct FTP type and the login details
3. This will create a new "drive" in the Computer window of nautilus
(Menu Places->Computer)
4. A new window will open and you'll be able to access the FTP like a
local folder.
Also, any program that use gnome virtual file system (like gedit, gimp
etc) you'll be able to navigate that FTP server through Open/Save File
dialog boxes in those programs.

Given that it's based on fuse, what happens if you run the command as
your normal user. This might have the desired affect.
