Sorry to hear you're having problems.

For your Optiplex are you able to run a live CD or usb drive ? If using
Ubuntu you may want to run the disks application and see what it reports
and /or format the whole thing again. Disks is quite powerful but user
friendly too so may be able to help assuming you can boot something to run
it from.

What errors do you get when installing?
