No. The fact that a disc wipe and new OS install has failed to solve
this suggests to me that something has changed in Zoom which is messing
with my set up. As I said in my OP, I have tried to run with all my
normal privacy and security defaults switched off, and this made no
difference. There may be something I'm missing here in terms of when a
restart is required for settings to take effect, but I wouldn't know
what/ where that might be.

Not to my knowledge. As audio incoming is working fine on facebook I am
mostly convinced this is a software issue specific to Zoom.

The browser is quite happy to serve up sound in facebook audio, and even
more relevant, the settings panel in Zoom via browser allows a sound
test, which passes. Similarly, the statistics tab in the same settings
panel show stats which suggest the system is working optimally for both
outgoing and incoming audio.
