you can also try;

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

then walk through the wizard and final do

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start


once your back into a graphical desktop check out the restricted driver
manager in the system> administration menu and if you have an nvidia or ati
card then consider the follwoing link;
