If they did the whole MS account thing, they should be able to reset:
-
https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/4028457/windows-10-reset-your-local-account-password
-
https://www.howtogeek.com/222262/how-to-reset-your-forgotten-password-in-windows-10/
You could try recovery:
- Boot into the recovery partition and do magic there (perhaps wipe &
reinstall even?)
- The laptop could also have come with a DVD to make all this easier.
-
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12415/windows-10-recovery-options
If they haven't done that, then you *might *be able to still change it:
-
https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/change-your-forgotten-windows-password-with-the-linux-system-rescue-cd/
I've done things similar to this in the past, just follow the steps.
(You should be able to create a bootable USB too)
Top-tip: Get all the family to use a password manager. Mozilla as a good
one, 1password, LastPass, KeepassX....there's a lot of choices.
Failing that, store all the passwords in a text file in an encrypted vault
(e.g. VeraCrypt) and remember the single password you need. Keep that file
(and any copies) *SAFE*!
Best of luck!
